ABOUT

Los Angeles-based multidisciplinary artist and architect Stephanie Wang has been integrating her practice and medium exploration for over 15 years. She continuously seeks to synthesize abstractions derived from the contrast and tension in which different elements coexist within her design, painting, and sculpture. Her work is driven by recording and examining the emotional connections that transport us, provoked by the sensory memory embedded in the materials she explores. As we encounter and absorb materials' texture, color, and composition, we can reconnect with instinctive reactions and reawaken vehemently.

She was born and raised in Quito, Ecuador, to Taiwanese and Colombian parents. Her multiethnic identity and cultural roots have profoundly influenced her work and mission to make art and education inclusive, accessible, and equitable. She earned a Bachelor’s in Architecture from California State Polytechnique Pomona, Teaching Artist Certification at Otis College of Art and Design. She is currently pursuing her Master’s in Studio Practice from Teacher’s College at Columbia University. Through her work with the CAIL mentorship program at Otis, she collaborates with non-profit organizations such as Surfrider, and 5Gyres, motivating young artists from multiple fields bridging education, environmental activism, and awareness.

Artist statement

I am an interdisciplinary artist, architect, and educator based in Los Angeles, California. Art and architecture permeate each other in my practice, mobilizing discovery and exploration. I was born and raised in Quito, Ecuador, to Taiwanese and Colombian parents. My multiethnic identity and experience have profoundly influenced my work and mission to make art and education inclusive, accessible, and equitable.

The realm of architecture provides language and tools to connect overlapping concepts, topics, and disciplines. I seek opportunities to design and teach with intentionality and apply design thinking strategies to create real solutions. My work incorporates integrative arts, sustainability, and community arts education. These missions extend to collaborating with non-profit organizations and young artists from multiple fields, bridging education and environmental awareness by mentoring with the Creative Action Integrated Learning program at Otis College of Art and Design.

As an interdisciplinary artist, I am continuously curious and motivated to synthesize abstractions within my work. I record my story as I journey through self-discovery with art. I reflect on lived experiences and examine emotional connections that transport us, provoked by the sensory memory embedded in materials. My work is driven by the contrast and tension in which different elements coexist within concepts and structures. I strive to expand my understanding of mediums, capturing the in-between of space and time before the tipping point of transformation. My current investigation explores ceramics' materiality by testing its plasticity and tensile strength limits. The inherent processes and alchemy of ceramics, with its chemical elements, infinite variables, and reactions, inspire and fascinate me. Observing analogies derived from the clay's qualities and the paradox of vulnerability and strength, I find parallels to my experience with transformation and resilience.
